The Final Experience

The dining room feels curated over generations, with updated traditional furnishings and new pieces, and has the character of a century-old Nantucket beach house.

Design Goals

The clients wanted a dining room that felt like it had been there for generations with a mixture of old and new. Here, they share family meals and host dinner parties with friends throughout the summer season.

The design sets the stage for the dramatic water and sunsets views, which the clients love and wanted to remain the focus.

Solutions

Key design decisions included:

selecting a light palette of finish materials to keep the focus on the views
balancing traditional elements and furnishings with new styles and interpretations
improving the lighting for a better dining experience at night
adding storage and serving capacity
improving the comfort of the seating

Considerations

The existing dining room had water damage from a storm, and furnishings and finish materials needed to be replaced.

The renovation and interior design blends with the rest of the house, yet incorporates a fresh take on traditional styles.

Coastal Context

Located on the waterfront and beachfront on Nantucket Island, the views were a priority for the family to maintain. Mitigating the solar heat gain and UV light in the room were considerations as well as selecting materials and decor that blend with the sand that gets tracked in daily.
